Few people outside of California are familiar with Los Gatos, but it’s the 33rd wealthiest city in the nation. It’s no wonder. Located on the southern most part of Santa Clara County, Los Gatos is located right in Silicon Valley and it’s convenient to San Francisco.
Los Gatos means the Cats in Spanish but previously called La Rinconada de Los Gatos, which means Cat’s Corner. The name came from the cougars and bobcats that are in the area foothills.
The town was founded in the 1850s and its first industry was a flourmill called Forbes Mill. The building, which is along Los Gatos Creek, is now a museum.
The weather in Los Gatos is pretty much like the rest of Silicon Valley, but it can be warmer and wetter. Generally, though, highs in the summer are in the high 80s, with lows in the high 50s. In the winter, it almost never freezes, with highs in the 60s on average, and lows in the 40s. It’s unusual for it to rain in the summer. In fact, Los Gatos brags of about 330 days of sunshine a year. The nearby Santa Cruz Mountains occasionally get snow, but Los Gatos rarely does.
Los Gatos is not a large city. Only about 30,000 people live there, but it’s a significant town. Netflix is located there, and it’s the town’s third largest employer, behind Mission Oaks Hospital and Safeway.
Los Gatos is pricy – very pricy. The median home price is close to $2 million with an average price of well over $2 million.
