When most Americans think of perfect weather and perfect beaches, it’s hard not to think about San Diego. At nearly the southern most part of the state of California, about 120 miles from Los Angeles, San Diego’s beaches reach right into Mexico.
San Diego is the second larges city in California, with a population of nearly a million and a half people. It might not be the oldest official city in California, but it was the first place European settlers landed on the West Coast. Spain’s Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo landed in the San Diego Bay in 1542. He claimed it a Spanish colony.
200 years later, a city was born, and in 1821, San Diego became part of Mexico. Nearly 30 years later, in 1850, the city became part of the United States after the Mexican-American war and after California became part of the United States.
Naturally, there is still a lot of Spanish and Mexican influence in San Diego. The city is filled with murals and architecture that represents its history.
Even more significant, though, is the weather. The Farmers’ Almanac ranks San Diego’s weather as among the top 10. We would argue that it’s the best in the nation. It rarely rains in San Diego. While it can get hot in the summer, most days are in the high 60s to low 70s.
San Diego is a military city. It’s home to the largest naval fleet in the world. One in 20 of those employed in San Diego County works in the defense industry. There are Navy bases, Marine bases and Coast Guard stations. There are also several defense contractors.
San Diego is home to several major wireless carriers. Qualcomm was founded there. Nokia, LG Electronics, Kyocera, Cricket Communications, and Novatel Wireless are all headquartered there.
If you are looking to relocate to San Diego, like the rest of Coastal California, real estate prices are very high. The median home price is climbing toward $500,000. Rancho Santa Fe is its most expensive area, with a median home price of more than $2 million.
